Slash and burn: Brazil shreds laws protecting its rainforests
0 comments Thursday, 26 May 2011Brazil has taken a big step towards passing new laws that will loosen restrictions on the amount of Amazon rainforest that farmers can destroy, after its lower house of parliament voted in favour of updating the country's 46-year-old forest code.
In a move described as "disastrous" by conservationists, the nation's congress backed a bill relaxing laws on the deforestation of hilltops and the amount of vegetation farmers must preserve. The law also offers partial amnesties for fines levied against landowners who have illegally destroyed tracts of rainforest. The legislation, which must still be passed by the Brazillian Senate and approved by President Dilma Rousseff, aims to help owners of smaller farms and ranches compete with under-regulated rivals in countries such as the USA and Argentina.
At present, under Brazil's forest code passed in 1965, 80 per cent of all property in the Amazon basin is supposed to be left as untouched forest. In other parts of the country, that figure ranges from between 20 and 35 per cent, depending on the ecosystem of the particular region.
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley: Everything You Need To Know About Her 'Transformers' Hero
0 comments Wednesday, 4 May 2011
So, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is at the top of Maxim's Hot 100 list. Can't say we don't agree with the pick -- have you seen her photographs? -- but still, even if we're about to get to know her better, movie fans don't exactly have the best idea of who Rosie is as an actress. That's about to change when "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" hits theaters this summer as Huntington-Whiteley steps in for Megan Fox as Shia LaBeouf's new love interest. Even with the movie still months away from release, we already know a whole lot about her character, Carly. After the jump, refresh yourself on all the details surrounding Rosie's "Transformers" heroine!
Meet Carly
Rosie stars in "Dark of the Moon" as Carly, Sam Witwicky's girlfriend and a previously established character in "Transformers" mythology. She's about to find herself in the crosshairs of a massive war between the Autobots and the Decepticons, but robot fatigue doesn't seem likely to end her relationship with Sam. Earlier this year, Rosie told us: "I found out through research that Carly was the character that Sam ends up marrying, and I was really, really thrilled to see that."
She's 'Catalytic' For The Action
Although she doesn't say much -- err, anything -- in the new trailer, Carly has a big role to play in "Dark of the Moon," according to Hasbro chief Brian Goldner: "She gets drawn unknowingly into the conflict. Because of his love for her, Shia is drawn into doing things he might not have otherwise done. She's really a catalyst for a lot of the action, more like the first movie where the human story is catalytic for the action."
