Man shot, killed in busy downtown park

SALT LAKE CITY -- A man was shot Thursday evening in the middle of a Salt Lake City park, right in the middle of several baseball games. He died several hours later.
Witnesses tackled the shooter and held him until police could get the suspect into custody.
It was picture day for hundreds of little league baseball players at Riverside Park near 700 North and 1400 West, and photographer Michael Kunde was busy at work.
Then suddenly, around 6 p.m., shots rang out in the middle of the games.
"We heard boom, boom, boom, and the coach had all of the kids hit the floor," Kunde said. "We were like, ‘Whoa, what was that?'"
It was a gunman, police say, who shot another man during an argument.
"I turned around just in time to see the guy drop right to the floor, and he was out," Kunde said.
In the middle of the panic, Kunde watched several other witnesses head straight for the gunman.
"We saw two or three guys just start bolting toward, I guess, the suspect, and then we just saw the guys jump on top of him and tackle him," he said.
One of the witnesses, who asked KSL not to identify him, held the accused gunman until police arrived. He told KSL off camera he saw the gunman throw his weapon into the river.
Police had so many witnesses they took them to the police station for questioning in a bus.
"There were a lot of people in the area," said Det. Lisa Pascadlo with the Salt Lake City Police Department. "This is a very populated park. It is a good warm spring day and we anticipate that's why we have many witnesses, because they were recreating in the park."
Police say they've detained the man they believe is the gunman.
Kunde is grateful that, with so many people so close to the shooting, no one else was hurt.
"I'm glad that the shot I think was in the opposite direction of over here, cause it would have been real scary if any of those bullets started flying this way," he said.
Police haven't released details about the victim or the gunman, but witnesses say the gunman was riding a bicycle on the trail.
