NM Man Wins $1 Million From Powerball Ticket

An Albuquerque man hit a $1 million lottery jackpot over the weekend after buying a ticket at the gas station at San Mateo and Candelaria.
Andrew Torn and his girlfriend were smiling ear to ear on Monday morning as they collected the winnings from the New Mexico Lottery.Torn’s May 14, 2011 Powerball ticket matched five numbers without the Powerball. Because he paid the extra dollar to activate the Power Play multiplier, his winnings were multiplied five times.“He was lucky twice. He was lucky to win $200,000, and then lucky that he added Power Play to his wager,” Linda Hamlin, with the New Mexico Lottery, said.Torn purchased the winning ticket at a Chevron gas station at San Mateo and Candelaria. The gas station has shelled out seven other winning tickets ranging from $1,000 to $160,000.“This is a lucky place. I’ve won $500 on a Pick Three numerous times,” J.D. Shockley said. “I think the people in here must have good vibes.”Mary Torres sold the winning ticket.“He comes in every day and he bought a ticket,” Torres said of torn.Torn returned to the gas station to give Torres a check for selling him the winning ticket.“I just lost my home and just got a new apartment so it came the right time," Torres said.Lottery officials said Torn and his girlfriend used to walk around the neighborhood, fantasizing about owning a home. On Tuesday, they bought one in cash.
