A 22-year-old Marine who had come to New York for Fleet Week died early Thursday after he was struck by a car while crossing the West Side Highway.
The Marine, whom the police have not yet identified, was returning to the amphibious assault ship Iwo Jima about 1 a.m., the police said. He and several other Marines stepped out of a cab near 49th Street and the West Side Highway, but as he crossed the street and headed toward Pier 88, he was hit by a 2003 Acura.
The driver of the Acura, a 39-year-old man, pulled over and called the police, who pronounced the Marine dead at the scene. The other Marines were not injured, the police said. The authorities said they did not suspect that any criminal behavior was involved.
“Our prayers are with him,” Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said during an appearance on MSNBC on Thursday. “Unfortunately, he got hit.”
During Fleet Week, active military ships dock around the city, allowing crews to enjoy urban life and giving the public an opportunity to tour military vessels.
