Colne drummer plays at Royal Wedding reception for Prince William and Catherine Middleton

A PENDLE musician who had the honour of playing at the Royal Wedding reception with his Ellie Goulding fronted band has described the day as “incredible”.
Joe Clegg (27), who lives in Colne and who was brought up in Nelson, is the drummer and musical director to top Brit Award winning singer Ellie Goulding.
The six-piece band performed at the intimate wedding reception after receiving a request from the Royal couple to play for them and an audience of around 300 close friends and family in Buckingham Palace.
The band, who hit the headlines 18 months ago as being “one to watch”, is said to be one of William and Kate’s favourites and were the only musicians to have the privilege of playing for the newlyweds.
The newly titled Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have already seen the band play at last year’s Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Bangor, North Wales, and just a few weeks before the wedding, invited them to play live at their big day - which was only publicly announced 24 hours before.
Although Joe, who attended St. Paul’s CE Primary School and Mansfield High School, has been sworn to secrecy about the details surrounding the day he said: “The only thing I can say is that it was an incredible experience.”
The band played a number of their own hits before an intimate rendition of Elton John’s “Your Song” where they serenaded the couple. The song got the band to No. 2 and has remained in the charts for 23 weeks. They are also believed to have played a number of other cover songs in front of the elite royal guests.
Joe’s passion for music started at a young age and he received his first drum kit at the age of 12. He studied music at Nelson and Colne College before attending the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford.
