John Wayne Gacy gaffe delights Michele Bachmann opponents

0 comments Tuesday 28 June 2011

On “Fox News Sunday,” Michele Bachmann told Chris Wallace, “Of course a person has to be careful with statements that they make. I think that's true.” Two days later, she may have wished she had followed her own advice a bit more closely. After her presidential campaign kickoff, Bachmann stepped into a cultural joke mindfield by comparing herself to John Wayne of Waterloo, Iowa. The only John Wayne that ever lived in Waterloo was the serial killer John Wayne Gacy.
The mistake has left an easy opening for a flank attack. David Letterman spent four minutes on the incident Monday night, discussing the “ugly and dumb things”politicians say.
On “Morning Joe,” Joe Scarbouragh shared a laugh with former Minnesota governor TimPawlenty, a Bachmann rival, when Scarbouragh asked, “Do you have any serial killers from your hometown?”
Bachmann told CNN that people make mistakes and that she is working to introduce people to her “strong academic scholarly background.”
She went on to say: “John Wayne’s parents’ first home was in Waterloo, Iowa and he was from Iowa and of course the main point I was making are the sensibilities of John Wayne, which is patriotism, love of country, standing up for our nation, that positive enthusiasm is what America’s all about... And that’s of course my main point.”

Walmart Stores (WMT) Trading Near $51.95 Support Level

Walmart Stores (NYSE:WMT) closed Monday's dramatic trading session at $52.29. In the past year, the stock has hit a 52-week low of $47.77 and 52-week high of $57.90. Walmart Stores (WMT) stock has been showing support around $51.95 and resistance in the $52.93 range. Technical indicators for the stock are Bearish and S&P gives Walmart Stores (WMT) a very positive 5 STARS (out of 5) strong buy rating. For a hedged play on Walmart Stores (WMT), look at the Dec '11 $50.00 covered call for a net debit in the $48.69 area. That is also the break-even stock price for this trade. This covered call has a duration of 172 days, provides 6.88% downside protection and an assigned return rate of 2.69% for an annualized return rate of 5.71% (for comparison purposes only). A lower-cost hedged play for Walmart Stores (WMT) would use a longer term call option in place of the covered call stock purchase. To use this strategy look at going long the Walmart Stores (WMT) Jan '12 $45.00 call and selling the Dec '11 $50.00 call for a total debit of $4.30. The trade has a lifespan of 172 days and would provide 5.72% downside protection and an assigned return rate of 16.28% for an annualized return rate of 35% (for comparison purposes only).

Michael Giacchino Talks About Creating The Score Of 'Cars 2

0 comments Saturday 18 June 2011

Back in April there were a select few of us who were lucky enough to travel all the way to Pixar Animation Studios, tucked away outside of San Francisco. The minute all of us newcomers walked inside our cartoon-loving hearts instantly melted over all of the wonderful drawings, models and other great Pixar-related stuff that were plastered on the walls in the main building. Quickly we shuffled around the confides of this vibrant facility as we talked with many people who all had one thing in common: they all had a hand in creating "Cars 2."

One of the first people that we were able to chat with to was composer Michael Giacchino. If you don't recognize the name, then maybe you know one of the many scores that he's composed between "The Incredibles," "Mission: Impossible III," J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" and his Oscar-winning pieces on Disney/Pixar's "Up" among many others.

Earlier in the morning, prior to meeting Giacchino, we were shown the opening scene for "Cars 2." When we shuffled in to begin the roundtable with Giacchino afterwards, he told us that the music in the background was only a temporary track, that the main one was still being worked on. He quickly made it up to us by replaying the opening scene, this time with the score that said was "British surf-rock." Although the particular guitar (a telecaster guitar) reminded a couple of people of the "James Bond" theme, it was only because that particular instrument was used so much in the sixties that it more or less became a staple of the decade.

Shortly after his presentation he opened the roundtable up to questions. Below he was able to go a bit more into detail on his particular choice of style for the animated feature and thoughts on the current state of action scores.

Texas faces elimination after loss to Florida

Texas hasn't done anything the easy way so far in the NCAA baseball tournament, and it will be no different in the College World Series.
The Longhorns face elimination after losing 8-4 to Florida in their first game at the new TD Ameritrade Park on Saturday night.
Hudson Randall and two other Florida pitchers limited the Longhorns to five hits, and Brian Johnson broke open the game with a two-out, two-run double in the seventh inning.
Now the Longhorns, in the CWS for a record 34th time, must beat North Carolina in a win-or-go-home game Monday afternoon.
"We've been pretty good in elimination games," Texas coach Augie Garrido said, "and here we are again."
Texas (49-18) won three straight after losing their second game in regionals, and they beat Arizona State twice after dropping the first game of their super regional.
"We all know we played a below-average game, and they capitalized on it," Garrido said. "But it doesn't mean we have to lose our spirit or our confidence in each other and it doesn't have to mean we give up. We've been here before. We know we can win. This championship's been won out of the losers' bracket before. So we know it can be done."
Taylor Jungmann (13-3), the Milwaukee Brewers' first-round draft pick, had another rough postseason outing for the Longhorns. He went 4 1-3 innings for his shortest start of the season, and four of the five runs against him were earned.
Jungmann, who started the season 13-0, had come into the CWS off losses in his previous two starts. He allowed two doubles and a single, walked four, hit a batter and threw two wild pitches.
"I felt for the first three innings I had decent command, but after that I fell out of rhythm," Jungmann said. "I walked more guys than I usually do. They took advantage of it, and that was about it."
Florida's Johnson came up with his big hit, off Nathan Thornhill, in his first game back since suffering a freak concussion.
"Sully talked to me before the at-bat," Johnson said, referring to coach Kevin O'Sullivan. "He said it's going to be a big at-bat for the game. So I just went up there really looking for one pitch I could drive. And I ended up getting that pitch.

'I never get tired of looking at it'

  • Carolyn Davidson was a student at Portland State when she met Phil Knight
  • She was paid $35 for her logo, but was given stock later (now worth $643k)
  • Mr Knight originally said:  'Well, I don't love it, but maybe it will grow on me'
  • Ms Davidson is still thrilled about her design and its influence
As a young college student, Carolyn Davidson was asked to design what would become one of the world's most recognizable logos.
It was nearly 40 years ago that Ms Davidson came up with the swoosh symbol for Nike, but she just told OregonLive.com: 'I like it. I really do. I never get tired of looking at it'.
She probably doesn't get tired of the acclaim or the money she earned from her work, either.
OregonLive.com estimates the gift of 500 shares of Nike stock she received as a result of her design is now worth $643,035, and she has never sold any.
Her name is also well known to students of design and professionals in the field.
In a party in her honour at Nike's offices in the Portland, Oregon area in 1983, Ms Davidson gave a video interview about her association with the company.
More than a decade before that, in 1971, Ms Davidson was a student at Portland State University, where Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman was a legendary track coach, and co-founder Phil Knight was a young associate professor of accounting.
Ms Davidson said she was sitting in a hall at the school, when Mr Knight happened to walk by. She said he overheard her mention that she couldn't afford to take oil painting.
She said: 'He said if I'd like the job, he'd pay me so much an hour to letter some signs. It started from there'.
Mr Knight remembers that he had offered her $2 an hour, though he joked in 1983 that 'I never thought she'd spend 17.5 hours on the project!'

Girl Power Lives on, Announces LMS! First British Self Made Billionaire Declared on Rich List

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - June 17, 2011) - Everybody loved the Spice Girls when they burst onto the music scene back in 1996, when "wannabe" hit the charts and the five 'spices' erupted into the lives of everyone and anyone- Girl Power came into our lives, like we didn't even know we were missing. "The gap between the number of male and female entrepreneurs may be closing, but it still exists. However, the UK boasts some fabulously impressive women who have started fantastic businesses" as stated on the www.startups.co.uk website. Showing "girl power is on its way back up" stated LMS director Tim Kennedy.
The Sunday times Rich List shows the mere mortals how the other half live, with the number of billionaires rising from 53 to 73 in one year alone, and for the first time ever more than 100 women appear in the top 1000 Rich list (statistics from Telegraph.co.uk and Sunday Times). "I think the Rich List is a great tool in business, it makes me want to succeed, and better myself all the time. I've constantly got entrepreneurs and high profile business people that I obtain to be like. It generally fills my head full of ideas and always leads me onto another idea" stated LMS owner Tim Kennedy.
The press, magazines and high fashion has often been blamed for the attitude of young girls towards themselves and their bodies, but having taken a look at the rich list of 2011, a strong female is also a role model when it comes to business, wealth and independence.
LMS was excited to hear that Britain now has its first self-made female billionaire. Dame Mary Perkins, the co-founder of Specsavers is now Britain's sixth richest woman worth £1.15 billion (Sunday Times). "In another life she would have loved to have been a librarian" stated thisismoney.co.uk website, now operating a billion pound family run business, that's debt free, Dame Mary "hasn't succumbed to the trappings of your average billionaire!" continued This Money. If success is depicted by wealth, then Dame Mary is a major success story, even by the Spice Girls' standards. Girl Power prevails!

Lawsuit derails Sink's debut on Food Network

An episode of "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" featuring The Sink in Boulder and its Buddah Basil Pizza and Texas Onion Straw Burger might never air on the Food Network as planned, thanks to a lawsuit the production company recently filed against the cable network.
Mark Heinritz, co-owner of The Sink, 1165 13th St., said the crew with "Diners Drive-ins and Dives'" production company Page Productions filmed at the University Hill location on two days in November, and he was waiting to hear back about a date the episode might air when he got some disappointing news Saturday.
"Due to a pending lawsuit between Page Productions and the Food Network, your premier episode on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives appears to have been put on hold or cancelled," according to an e-mail sent to Heinritz from Dora Long, who runs a fan page for the show's host, Guy Fieri.
Neither Food Network or Page Productions responded to calls from the Camera on Tuesday.
According to the lawsuit, which was filed May 13 in U.S. District Court in Minnesota, Food Network signed on for 39 more episodes of three seasons in 2007 and agreed to retain and pay Fieri separately from the show's budget. But, according to the suit, the Food Network has told the production company that it wouldn't allow it to produce seasons 13 and 14, and Page Productions claims the network has failed to make payments.
The Food Network reportedly has until June 8 to respond, leaving episodes of "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" that were previously scheduled to premier on hold, Heinritz said.
"It's disappointing," he said. "Of all the things that could have gone wrong, I didn't see this one coming."
Heinritz said he was anticipating a surge in business might coincide with the airing of the show.
"We have been told by multiple other places on the show that places regularly see a 20-plus percent increase in business, and we were hoping for a little push from it," he said, adding that the film crew did a nice job showing how they make their own sauerkraut and pickles, for example.
"We hope it will air," he said. "We hope they get it all sorted out."
Foolish Craig's, 1611 Pearl St., also hosted the production company when they came to Boulder, and the episode featuring the café known for its crepes and brunch concoctions premiered in March. It has been replayed since, and co-owner Mitch Arden said they definitely notice a bump in business when the show airs.
"It's been better than anything I've ever seen," he said, adding that most advertisements get "lost in the shuffle."
He said tourists to Boulder have stopped in to order the specific menu items featured on the episode -- a guacamole BLT and the crepe cake. He said the show has especially helped to boost dessert sales.

Strikeforce Heavyweight Tournament Features Old-School MMA Archetypes

A comparison between the heavyweights in tonight's installment of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix and some of the greatest MMA pioneers of the 1990s.
Jun 18, 2011 - We often speak of the "modern era" of MMA in a confident, off-hand manner as if everything in today's sport has changed from the early days of 1990's MMA. We talk about cross-training, a "new generation of athletes" raised on MMA who don't have a native style, etc. etc.
Despite all that, the reality, as evidenced by Saturday's Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix, is that things haven't really changed all that much. In the old days of MMA there were a few styles that worked -- Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Dutch kickboxing, American catch wrestling by way of Japan, Russian Sambo and good old fashioned brawling.
Looking at Saturday's two quarter-final bouts, exponents of four of those styles will be making a case for supremacy, the Russians all fought in the February installment. Let's look at how the fighters break down.
Alistair OvereemStyle: Dutch Kickboxing
1990s Analogue:
Bas Rutten
Holland is a tiny country that's had an outsize impact on combat sports. Starting with the gangster-kickboxer Jan Plas who trained Japanese Kyokushin Karate and brought modern kickboxing to Holland in 1978 with the opening of his Meijiro Gym in Amsterdam. Plas' student Rob Kamen added a big helping of Muay Thai to his repertoire and became one of the greatest kickboxers of all time.
The Japanese pro-wrestlers who created the proto-MMA events like Pancrase, Shooto and Rings paid close attention and recruited many Dutch fighters to compete in their promotions. None more successfully than the legendary Bas Rutten who became the King of Pancrase and later the UFC heavyweight champion. Rutten pioneered the template that Dutch fighters have followed ever since: devastating Muay Thai/Kyokushin striking combined with effective submission grappling.
Alistair Overeem is currently the most fearsome living exponent of that style. He's the first fighter to hold a major MMA title and the K-1 kickboxing championship at the same time. He's got excellent striking technique, awesome power and the submission skills to finish a stunned opponent with a nice range of holds.

Sarah Palin’s “Learning” Tour: A Revolutionary Road Trip?

At the annual Rolling Thunder event in Washington, D.C., on Sunday, Sarah Palin will kick off a week-long tour of U.S. historical sites. She will be accompanied by her husband Todd and daughter Piper. “The tour will originate in Washington, D.C., and will proceed north up the east coast,” reads a statement from her PAC. “More information will follow.”
Palin has no scheduled speeches or rallies, though there may be some events she’s already been invited to along the way that she will participate in, according to Tim Crawford, her PAC treasurer. “It’s a learning tour,” Crawford says, “a tour of getting back to places that were key to the founding of this nation. There are a number of places from revolutionary war on that are significant to our nations history in the northeast.”
The tour, combined with a forthcoming independently produced film about her tenure as Alaska’s governor, is sure to drum up speculation that Palin is planning to run for President, something that would radically shakeup the current field of Republican contenders. She has always said that she would be an unconventional candidate and the newly announced tour is certainly unconventional. One can only imagine the mob scene when the bus, emblazoned with “Join the Fundamental Restoration of America,” pulls up to Gettysburg with hundreds of reporters in tow.
Crawford would not confirm any of stops aside from Rolling Thunder. But north of Washington, there are some very obvious sites of historical significance. A few possibilities: Antietam in Maryland, Gettysburg in Pennsylvania, the site where Washington crossed the Delaware River, the Liberty Bell and Constitution Hall in Philadelphia, the Boston Tea Party and – perhaps most important politically – Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where Paul Revere delivered his warning of the coming British invasion. We’ll soon know whether Palin’s trip is also an indication of major changes to come.

Movie of 'Barefoot Bandit' eyed by US govt

The US government now owns the story of Colton Harris-Moore, the gawky delinquent thief and burglar who will cool his heels in prison while a movie about his exploits as the "Barefoot Bandit" appears headed for a theatre near you.
The 20-year-old Harris-Moore pleaded guilty to seven federal felony charges on Friday in a plea agreement that recommends he serve between five-and-a-quarter and six-and-a-half years in prison to resolve the federal aspects of his two-year crime spree, including the thefts of two planes and a boat and being a fugitive in possession of a firearm.
Still pending are more than 30 state felony charges in four counties, which could add time to Harris-Moore's sentence.
San Juan County, Washington State, prosecutor Randall Gaylord said Friday he expects the state charges will be consolidated at a plea hearing in Island County Superior Court next month.
A 28-page plea agreement filed in the federal case indicates Harris-Moore is negotiating the purchase of his life story for a movie. The government hopes the negotiations succeed - Harris-Moore owes a minimum of $US1.4 million ($A1.33 million) in restitution in the federal case, and at least $US250,000 ($A237,868.7) in state restitution, prosecutors said.
According to the agreement, any proceeds from Harris-Moore's story will go to his many victims.
"Mr. Harris-Moore's flight from justice is over," said US Attorney Jenny Durkan at a news conference after the plea hearing. "While we cannot stop him from telling his story, we can make sure he never sees a dime for his crimes."
John Henry Browne, Harris-Moore's attorney, said his client does not want money or publicity.
Harris-Moore pleaded guilty to bank burglary; interstate transportation of an aircraft; interstate and foreign transportation of a stolen firearm; being a fugitive in possession of a firearm; piloting an aircraft without a valid airman's certificate; interstate transportation of a stolen vessel; and interstate transportation of a stolen aircraft.
Sentencing is set for October 28 before US District Judge Richard Jones.

Joliet shuts down bar at Bellagio’s Pizzeria for a week

JOLIET — The bar at Bellagio’s Pizzeria will be shut down for seven days on an order issued Thursday by Mayor Thomas Giarrante, who also is the city’s liquor commissioner.
The closing was ordered because of a an incident in which a man allegedly was shot in the hand in the restaurant’s parking lot on June 4.
Chris Rouskey, attorney for Bellagio’s, said Thursday that there was no shooting on the restaurant’s property.
Bellagio’s has security personnel and has never had these problems with the city or police before, he said.
“It’s not supposed to be the Wild West, and we don’t let it get like that,” he said.
Bellagio’s already faced a June 28 hearing because of a May 15 incident in which police said they cleared 200 people out of the parking lot of the restaurant at 116 S. Larkin Ave.
Rouskey said Bellagio’s has never had that many people on its property.
A hearing will be scheduled on the more recent incident.
Bellagio’s can continue to do restaurant business under the order, which took effect Thursday, but cannot sell liquor, which Rouskey said will be detrimental during Father’s Day weekend.
“We are uncertain why the city took the action they did without first affording us a hearing. I haven’t even seen police reports. This is a shock to us,” Rouskey said.
In another order issued Thursday, Hammers, located at 2771 Black Road, was fined $500 for an incident on May 15 in which the bar allegedly continued to serve alcohol after hours. Police were called to Hammers at 4 a.m. with a report of a battery, and the bar had a 2 a.m. license for that night. A hearing on the matter was held Thursday.

Famed cheese maker, ‘Ig’ Vella, dies at 82

As the elder statesman of artisanal cheeses, Ignazio “Ig” Vella gave pointed advice to those who wanted to follow him into the handmade cheese business: “Don’t be stupid.”
He was a gruff straightshooter, and the salvo was his way of warning that success required a willingness to toil for uncertain financial gain.
Once that caveat was spelled out, Vella invariably became an unselfish teacher and tireless advocate for small-scale producers of cheese, according to those in the industry.
He had a lifetime of expertise – his father, Gaetano “Tom” Vella, pioneered Italian-style cheeses in the West after opening Vella Cheese Co. in Sonoma, Calif., in 1931, the year his son turned 3.
Ig Vella, who took over his family’s business in the 1980s, died June 9 at his Sonoma home after a long illness, said a daughter, Chickie Vella. He was 82.
The company is best known for its award-winning Dry Monterey Jack, which originally was marketed as a substitute for Parmesan and other hard Italian cheeses and vanished from the American market during World War I.
“On the West Coast, and beyond, he was regarded as the godfather of artisanal cheese,” said Christine Hyatt, president of the Colorado-based American Cheese Society, which recognized him in 2006 with its first life achievement award.
“He was truly a giant in our community and a mentor to so many,” she said.
A Sonoma native, Vella was born in 1928 and as a boy rode with his father in a Model A truck to deliver cheese.
After his father opened a secondary facility in southern Oregon in 1935, the younger Vella spent summers working there.
When he was 11, he served as a covert translator for his father, a Sicilian immigrant unsure of his English skills.
“I sat in the offices of Kraft Foods while my father discussed business with J.L. Kraft,” the company founder, Vella told The Associated Press in 2000. “My father quizzed me all the way home on what happened.”
A penchant for high jinks got the younger Vella expelled from his local high school, and he graduated from San Rafael Military Academy in 1946.
After earning a bachelor’s degree in history at Santa Clara University in 1950, Vella trained as an officer in the Air Force and served in the Korean War.

2nd UPDATE Spanish PM: Euro Zone Will Support Greece

SAINT PETERSBURG, Russia (Dow Jones)--Europe will find a way to overcome the debt crisis in Greece, but needs a "common sense contribution" from the financial sector to guarantee success, Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said Saturday.
Zapatero told a panel at a Russian investment conference that the continent's long-term political commitment to integration and its awareness of a deep interdependence between member states would ensure that a political solution to the current crisis can be found.
However, he avoided any more direct answer to the question of whether Greece should be allowed to default. International ratings agencies have cut their ratings of Greece to the lowest level above "default" this week, increasingly convinced that it cannot manage its debt burden on its own, and doubtful of the willingness of its partners to keep helping it.
"I don't accept the short-term analysis," Zapatero said. "It's a snapshot that doesn't reflect the realities of the European project."
Zapatero promised that European Union leaders, who convene next week for a two-day summit that is sure to be dominated by the debt crisis, will support Greece with "reasonable measures", acceptable to financial markets.
But both he and Finnish President Tarja Halonen, addressing the same panel discussion, stressed the need for the private sector to show "common sense" and "responsibility."
A number of euro-zone states, led by Germany, have insisted that they won't finance additional aid to Greece unless private-sector creditors accept a "rolling-over" of current exposure, effectively waiving the right to have their bonds redeemed on schedule.
International ratings agencies have said they would be likely to consider any such agreement a default. That would have profound consequences, as the European Central Bank has said it would no longer be able to lend money against Greek government bonds in that case. The loss of ECB support could lead to an immediate collapse of the Greek banking system, which currently bridges an EUR85 billion funding gap with loans from the ECB.
At the same conference Friday, Deutsche Bank AG (DB, DBK.XE) chief executive Josef Ackermann had accepted the need for Greece's creditor banks to take an active role in resolving the crisis, but stressed that the austerity plan imposed upon Greece has to be supplemented with a broader plan to support growth there.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy pledged Thursday that they would work with the ECB to achieve a mutually acceptable solution, but it is still unclear whether Greece can meet its obligations until that solution is found, not least due to increasing political resistance to the austerity that its creditors have demanded of it.
Zapatero dismissed the notion that the euro as a whole is in crisis, and was supported in that opinion by Halonen.
Zapatero said that the essence of the crisis is in individual states' debts. Greece's troubles have led many market participants to fear contagion to other economies with debt problems, such as Spain's--although Spain's are largely concentrated in its banks rather than in its government.
He pledged that the euro zone would do a better job in future of observing the currency union's rules on budget discipline and competitiveness.
"What is the lesson we have learned? Economies shouldn't be growing on the basis of debt alone," Zapatero had said earlier in a speech that called for economic models to be overhauled so as to reduce imbalances in the world economy.
Spain's boom of the first eight years of the century had depended excessively on real estate development. The explosion of the property bubble in 2008 left its banks with billions of euros in bad loans and exposed a widespread loss of international competitiveness over the previous decade, reflected in a record-high current account deficit and a budget gap more than 10% of gross domestic product.
Elsewhere in his speech, Zapatero warned elsewhere against that collective efforts to prevent and tackle crises have tended to fall apart as the crisis passes, and warned against complacency.
"When a new passage of growth emerges, factors accumulate that would bring us back to another financial crisis," Zapatero said.
He also called for the introduction of a tax on international financial transactions, and for the Group of 20 industrial and developing nations to develop a framework for adopting decisions that will effectively bind its members, rather than depending on voluntary cooperation.

Will doctors continue to support health care mandate?

As many of the nation's physicians gather at a convention in Chicago this weekend, one of the most controversial issues on their agenda is continued support of the "individual mandate," a key part of President Obama's health care overhaul.
"It will be intensely debated," said Dr. Lori Heim, a North Carolina family physician who travelled to Chicago for the annual meeting of the American Medical Association (AMA), the nation's largest physicians group.
AMA support for the Affordable Care Act, and specifically the individual mandate, which requires that nearly all Americans purchase health insurance, was seen as important in setting the stage for its passage last year.
"AMA's support was and is more significant with respect to PR than legislative politics," said Heritage Foundation health care expert Edmund Haislmaier.
Of course, the Obama administration is facing dozens of legal challenges to the Affordable Care Act, including one brought by Republican governors and attorneys general from more than two dozen states that's now before the federal appeals court in Atlanta. Those challenges will almost certainly be decided by the Supreme Court, perhaps as soon as next year, according to CBS News legal analyst Andrew Cohen.
In light of the fact that the battle has moved to the courts, it's not clear what real world effect a change in position by the AMA would have, though it would certainly give more fuel to opponents of "Obamacare" going into the 2012 elections. Haislmaier said it would also weaken the White House narrative that the Affordable Care Act is "settled and everybody needs to get on board with implementation."
Members of the AMA on both sides of the issue said the debate within the organization mirrors the larger national discussion about the health care law and the individual mandate.
"In the same way that you're seeing this debate being played out in the political arena, similarly you have people on both sides of the issue in the AMA," said Dr. Robert Sewell, past president of the American Society of General Surgeons, a medical group that opposes the individual mandate.
Heim, board chair of the American Academy of Family Physicians, which supports the mandate, agreed. She said the issue has played out along political party lines among physicians just as it has in society at large.
CBSNews.com Special Report: Health Care Reform
"Although I think the individual responsibility will get the support it deserves," she said. "I think it will be intensely debated."
Heim added she believes a majority of AMA members support the individual mandate. "Most physicians want to see a change in health care in the nation," she said.
"If you think about it in terms of individual responsibility," Heim said. "We want patients and the public to be responsible about their health. They also need to be responsible about health insurance."

Amy O'Bryan woke up at 4a.m. yesterday to get to the office of Dr.Brian Kvitko early.
She badly needed a tooth extraction.
O'Bryan , a 35-year-old Columbus resident , hadn't visited a dentist in 20 years, and a wisdom tooth had been bothering her for 10 of them.
The corporate-cafeteria worker, lacking dental insurance , went without help until yesterday.
From 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Clintonville neighborhood, several area dentists each volunteered a few hours to perform free cleanings, fillings and extractions for those in need as part of an event sponsored by Dr. Kvitko, Metnes & Associates.
The effort marks one of many throughout central Ohio aimed at providing access to dental care for the needy, said Denise Haring, the president of the Columbus Dental Society and a Reynoldsburg dentist.
O'Bryan, who took the day off from work for the procedure, feared that it would hurt but showed up anyway.
"I can tell the people here care, even though we don't know each other," she said. "I'm just glad someone cares enough to do this."
The event was affiliated with Dentistry From the Heart, a nonprofit group based in Florida that helps arrange similar efforts. Kvitko and his co-workers learned about the initiative at a November conference.
By 7:30 a.m. yesterday, about 150 people had signed up for services. (The organizers hoped to treat at least 526 people - to set a record among Dentistry From the Heart events.)
"Most people will tell you they don't like going to the dentist," said Kvitko, who donated dental work to Ted Williams, the one-time homeless man with the "golden voice" who drew international attention.
"But today is a day where everyone wants to be here and will even wait for a few hours."
Although volunteers didn't arrive until 6 a.m., a security guard began giving out wristbands at 3:30. The first person in line had shown up around midnight.
Connie Fix found 30 people ahead of her at 5:30. Not having seen a dentist in four years, the West Side resident, 44, needed a cleaning and some fillings.
At 8 a.m., with her teeth clean, she had to re-register and go to the back of the line for the fillings. She would have to wait a couple of hours, she was told, but she didn't mind.
"I brought a book," Fix said, "and I don't have to be at work until 4."
Many people sat outside in folding chairs or on a nearby curb awaiting a turn indoors. Music played from speakers in the parking lot, while volunteers sold food and coffee.
Representatives from the Ohio Benefit Bank were available to talk about opportunities for free or reduced-cost health care and other services. Next door, in a vacant lot, a blood drive was under way.

United says delays will continue through weekend

It could take several days for thousands of stranded travelers to get home after a United Airlines computer system shut down for several hours, leading to widespread cancelations Friday night.
The unspecified "network connectivity" problem was fixed and flights resumed early Saturday, but the airline said delays could persist throughout the weekend. Also, with flights nearly full, there was little room for passengers whose flights had been cancelled to rebook.
"There's literally nowhere to put them," airline analyst Robert Mann said. "There are already very few empty seats on the flights that operate."
United's planes were an average of 86.8 percent full in May.
To try to alleviate the congestion, the airline allowed passengers with tickets on Saturday flights to cancel or delay their travel to a later date without charge. Luckily, Saturday is one of the lighter travel days. The outage started about 7:15 p.m. CDT Friday and lasted for about five hours. Long lines of passengers formed at airports in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Denver and Chicago. Some passengers ended up spending the night at airports or found hotel rooms in the cities where they were stranded.

The Beatles Breakup According to Paul McCartney

So, who is really responsible for the breakup of The Beatles?
Well, if you ask Paul McCartney that question, he apparently will tell you that John Lennon is the man who should take the blame for the breakup of one of the most successful bands in the history of music.
During an interview with British radio host Geoff Lloyd, McCartney talked about a number of different issues including how he believes Ringo Starr should be Knighted, and the breakup of the Beatles.
After the group recorded their Let It Be album, McCartney tried to change Lennon’s mind about breaking up the band, according to Gather.
“Basically me, George [Harrison] and Ringo said, ‘Does this have to be final? Could we do a couple of gigs or can we think about this tomorrow?’ But John was off with Yoko [Ono] and he was saying ‘No, no, it’s great — I feel a release,’ and all that. So that was kind of final,” the rock legend said.
The man who is going to perform at Yankees Stadium on July 15 and 16 also said he believes Ringo Starr, the Beatles’ drummer, should be knighted.
When asked if he could just ask the Queen himself, he said, “The last time I went by she was out. Otherwise I would have popped in and said ‘Look, love, Sir Richard Starkey’. Because I do think it’s about time, but she probably was a bit busy with Sir Brucie,” according to NME.
The British rock band first took America by storm in 1964 when they made their first American television appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” Seventy-three million people watched the show live on TV, making it one of the most important moments in TV history.

Tiger-Like U.S. Open Seen From Rory McIlroy as Woods Sits Injured at Home

There’s a Tiger Woods-like performance being put on at the U.S. Open, while the game’s biggest draw hobbles at home on crutches.
Rory McIlroy’s record-setting play through two rounds at Congressional Country Club has drawn comparisons to Woods’s romp 11 years ago.
“It’s like Tiger at Pebble Beach when he pulled away,” Mike Davis, executive director of the U.S. Golf Association, told reporters inside the clubhouse of the course in Bethesda, Maryland. “I think it’s fantastic.”
In 2000, Woods won his first of three U.S. Open titles by a record 15 shots at California’s Pebble Beach Golf Links. His 12- under-par final score stands as the lowest winning total in 110 U.S. Opens.
McIlroy, at 11 under after 36 holes, has a chance to eclipse Woods’s mark this weekend.
“I’m feeling good, feeling very good,” McIlroy said in a news conference. “It’s funny to me, you know, it feels quite simple. I’m hitting fairways. I’m hitting greens. I’m holing my fair share of putts. That’s basically it.”
What has seemed simple to McIlroy has drawn high praise from others.
“You just can’t fathom it,” said Robert Garrigus, who played two groups in front of McIlroy today and sits at 2 under. “It’s crazy to see. I played well, but I can’t do anything about what he’s doing. I can’t go break his knee.”
Garrigus was among those now only left to wonder if McIlroy will be able to hold on for the victory. Unlike Woods during his prime, McIlroy has a history of surrendering leads in golf’s major tournaments. He blew a four-shot lead over the final round of the Masters Tournament in April with an 8-over-par 80 on the final 18 holes.

Gracious Loser

As devastating as that was for McIlroy, he congratulated winner Charl Schwartzel of South Africa, drawing support from golf fans and other players. While it might be nice to be well- liked, McIlroy said he’s ready for some of the praise to be heaped on him.
“I’d like to be happy for myself,” he said. “It would be nice to get a little piece of the action. These records, they’re nice, but they don’t really mean anything until the end of the tournament.”
McIlroy’s total of 131 eclipsed the 36-hole scoring mark of 132 set by Ricky Barnes two years ago at Bethpage State Park’s Black Course in New York.

Among The Games Presidents Play, There's Also Golf

If it's a sunny weekend in Washington, chances are a motorcade will be leaving the White House for the golf course. President Obama typically golfs with the same small circle of friends and aides. One of his rules for a day on the course: No talking politics.
That changes Saturday. House Speaker John Boehner is joining the president for 18 holes. Vice President Biden and Republican Gov. John Kasich of Ohio are also coming along, turning this particular game into a much anticipated "golf summit."
Horse racing may be the "sport of kings," but when it comes to presidents, they play golf.
"It is the most popular sport that presidents play. Fifteen of the last 18 American presidents were golfers, starting with William Howard Taft," New York Times correspondent Don Van Natta Jr. says. He wrote a book about presidential golfers called First Off the Tee.
"I think presidents love the camaraderie they find out on the links," Van Natta says. "They also like the fact that they can leave the press and the public behind on the first tee — and they don't have to see them again until the 18th green."
A Game Of Politics
Occasionally a president doesn't leave the press behind, sometimes with disastrous results.
President George W. Bush no doubt wishes he could take a mulligan on a moment from 2002, after a suicide bombing in Israel.
"I call upon all nations to do everything they can to stop these terrorist killers. Thank you. Now watch this drive," he said, thwacking the ball.
Years later, Bush told an interviewer that he gave up golf during his presidency. He said during a war it sends the wrong signal.
Obama has not had the same concern. Still, Van Natta says, this president is less avid on the course than other wartime commanders in chief.

Joss Stone target of murder plot by men armed with swords,

0 comments Wednesday 15 June 2011
Two sword-wielding men plotting to kidnap and kill soul singer Joss Singer were busted in Britain, authorities said Wednesday.
The suspects were apprehended Monday in a red Fiat Punto near the 24-year-old singer's home in southwest England after police received reports of a "suspicious vehicle," according to BBC News.
The pair possessed swords, rope and a body bag as well as maps and aerial photos of Stone's home in Devon, Sky News reported.
"The two men in custody had in their possession information relating to an individual in the Cullompton area and items which lead us to suspect that they may have intended to commit a criminal offense," said Detective Inspector Steve Parker, the lead investigator.
It is unclear if Stone was home at the time. She has been informed of the arrests.
The men, ages 33 and 30, were not identified but are believed to have driven south from Manchester, 200 miles away in northern England.
"We're unable to say anymore at this time, but I would like to thank the local residents for reporting the suspicious car," Parker said in a statement. "It's important to stress that no properties have been burgled and no individuals have been harmed."
Stone, a friend of Prince William and his wife, Kate, has sold more than 10 million albums worldwide.

Crystal Harris Dumped Hugh Hefner Because...

It's definitely over for Crystal Harris and Hugh Hefner.
The Playboy founder acknowledged via Twitter yesterday that his 25-year old fiancee walked out on him five days prior to their wedding, and now Harris has also confirmed the split.
"After much deep reflection and thought, I have decided to end my engagement with Hef," Harris said in a statement. "I have the utmost respect for Hef and wish him the best going forward."
So, why did Crystal make this decision, aside from the obvious (dude is REALLY old!)? Sources have linked her to Jordan McGraw, but Harris' rep says this chatter is a "complete fabrication."
Instead, according to various insiders, the problems came down to money and music. TMZ quotes those in the know as saying Harris was annoyed by her "couple hundred dollar" per week allowance, and felt like she didn't have the freedom necessary to pursue a singing career.
It's unclear how this could be the case, though. Aren't 85-year olds asleep by six every night?

Lunar eclipse expected turn the moon red

The moon will rise in Earth's shadow this evening in a rare lunar eclipse that could turn our natural satellite a deep shade of red.
With clear skies, the celestial spectacle will be visible across the UK, with the exception of northern Scotland, as soon as the moon rises after sunset.
Moonrise time varies with location, but for observers in London, the show will begin at 9.13pm. Further north, in Glasgow, moonrise begins at 9.58pm.
A total lunar eclipse happens when the moon, Earth and sun line up, and our home planet casts a vast shadow that engulfs the moon.
When the moon moves into the darkest part of the Earth's shadow, the umbra, it will turn a slate grey or brick red colour.
The moon changes colour because blue light - and other short wavelengths - scatter more in the Earth's atmosphere, with more red light getting through.
The Royal Astronomical Society said the eclipse, if visible, could be a spectacular opportunity for photographers. The moon will remain low in the night sky, so observers will need a clear horizon and cloudless skies to see it well. Unlike solar eclipses, a lunar eclipse is safe to watch with the naked eye.
The event will be visible in Australasia, southern Japan, a large area of Asia, India, Africa, Europe and the eastern part of South America.
The total eclipse ends at 22.03pm, when the Moon starts to leave the darkest part of the umbra. At this time, the moon will be only five degrees above the south-eastern horizon from London, whilst in Glasgow the whole of the lunar disk will not yet have appeared and from northern Scotland it will not be visible at all.
In the final stage of the eclipse, the moon moves into the lighter part of Earth's shadow, the penumbra, and will likely take on a yellowish hue. The eclipse will be over just after midnight, at 00.02am Thursday morning.

Natalie Portman welcomes a son with fiancé Benjamin Millepied

Natalie Portman and her fiancé Benjamin Millepied  are celebrating the arrival of a baby boy.
People magazine broke the news of the birth, but no other details have been released.
The couple, who met on the set of the film Black Swan, have made no secret of their delight at the thought of becoming parents.

Although usually protective about her private life, Portman, 30, started to speak more openly since announcing her pregnancy.
When she accepted her Best Actress Oscar earlier this year, she paid tribute to her French husband-to-be, saying: 'My beautiful love, Benjamin, who has now given me my most important role of my life.'
Speaking about motherhood, she admitted: 'I'm sure I'll make lots of mistakes, but I'm open to learning.'
Portman also revealed that she has relaxed her strict vegan diet in order to nourish her growing child properly.
'I actually went back to being vegetarian when I became pregnant, just because I felt like I wanted that stuff,' she said.
'I was listening to my body to have eggs and dairy and that sort of stuff.
'I know that there are people who do stay vegan. But I think you have to just be careful, watch your iron levels and your B12 levels and supplement those if there are things you might be low in in your diet.'

Harrison Ford's Iconic “Raiders” Turns 30

0 comments Tuesday 14 June 2011

“Raiders of the Lost Ark,” which features one of actor Harrison Ford's most memorable performances as Indiana Jones, turned 30 years old on Sunday. Opening on June 12, 1981, the movie paved the way for the rest of the Indiana Jones franchise, which produced two more films in the following years—“Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” in 1984 and “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” in 1989. George Lucas brought Ford back with his famous fedora and whip in 2008 with “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.” The film also provided a stratospheric boost to director Stephen Spielberg, whose previous movie “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” was well-received but far from a box office smash. Spielberg teamed up with George Lucas for the film, which sold out theatres around the country and earned Spielberg a Best Director Oscar, according to Zap2it's celebrity blog. Shia LeBoef, Ford's costar from “Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” told MTV news that another Indiana Jones movie may be in the works. "I talked to [Harrison Ford]," he said. "He said he's staying in the gym, he said he's heard no word, but he does know that [George Lucas] is out there looking for a MacGuffin. He said he's staying in the gym, so it means [the movie is] not so far off."

'Happily Divorced'

TV Land's mission of bringing back old-time, feel-good, just-plain-funny sitcoms isn't proving quite as easy as the network made it look with "Hot in Cleveland."
"Happily Divorced," TV Land's third shot at a new old-style sitcom - the George Segal parents-and-son romp "Retired at 35" is the other one - tries harder than "Cleveland" and generates fewer laughs.
"Happily Divorced" is not without its pleasures, however, starting with Fran Drescher, who co-created the show and plays the lead character, a florist named Fran.
Okay, Drescher, who most famously starred in "The Nanny," may be an acquired taste. But if you like her combination of attitude and accent, she provides a full dose of both here.
The premise of the show is that after 18 years of marriage, Fran's husband, Peter (John Michael Higgins), announces he's gay. The first show opens with that scene and then flashes forward six months, at which time they're divorced, but Peter is still living in the house because he can't afford a place of his own.
He is, ironically, a real estate agent, which explains his current income-generating problem.
Fran and Peter still get along just fine. She still reminds him where his many medicines are and he still invites her to the annual "Sound of Music" sing-along, to which he wears shorts and an Alpine hat.
If that suggests the show contains a lot of gay jokes, it does. They're gay-friendly jokes, however, the kind that gay folks and straight folks generally will find just as funny.
When Fran starts to date again, for instance, Peter admits he's a little upset, because "I never pictured you sleeping with another man."
"Ditto," she replies.
Or, back when Fran thinks Peter will be moving out, he says, "Where am I supposed to go?"
"You're gay," she says. "Go to the YMCA."
You see the dilemma here: While this joke isn't particularly offensive, it also isn't all that clever. A lot of setup for modest reward.
"Happily Divorced" has a cinema-vérité back story, as it happens. Drescher created it with Peter Marc Jacobson, who also co-created "The Nanny" and is Drescher's real-life ex-husband.
After they divorced, he acknowledged to her he was gay. Sometimes when life hands you a lemon, you make sitcoms.
It also lets them share some of their good-natured banter with the world. Like when Fran's date says, "I love her voice," Peter replies, "Give it time."
To flesh out its fuller sitcom potential, "Happily Divorced" also gives Fran an extremely annoying set of parents, played by Rita Moreno and Robert Walden. She has a best friend, Judi (Tichina Arnold), and a flower deliveryman named Cesar (Valente Rodriguez).
It may be that all this will develop an interesting story. On opening night, though, it feels like the show's primary goal is to set up one-liners - which is not how the great shows we see on TV Land reruns got to be great.

2011 Hyundai Elantra chosen best value in family ‘shootout’

The 2011 Hyundai Elantra has won a unique best value honor when matched among five compact cars that seat five, get more than 35 mpg and are priced at less than $20,000.
The evaluation, conducted by the website Cars.com, revealed the Elantra earned the honors, according to the site’s editors, for its exterior and interior design as well as its smooth ride.
“With unrelenting gas prices and continued economic uncertainty, our shootout couldn’t be timelier in terms of what car shoppers are looking for,” said Patrick Olsen, Cars.com editor-in-chief. “In fact, four of the five models that competed have been among dealer’s best sellers in April and May.

“Based on our results, every car shopper looking in this segment needs to put the 2011 Hyundai Elantra at the top of their consideration set. Not only does this car get 40 mpg on the highway, the Elantra also has refined styling, solid handling, a comfortable interior and incredible affordability for all the features that buyers will get.”
To determine the winner of the shootout, experts from Cars.com and USA Today and a Chicago-area family put the contenders through a variety of tests over a series of three days.
Tests included a day-long drive to determine accurate real-world mileage, back-to-back driving by all judges on the same course to determine handling and comfort and a side-by-side comparison of the cars’ features and styling.

Myanmar gov't battles rebels near Chinese border

In this photo taken Jan. 10, 2011, Myanmar officials take part in Manaw festival (Kachin's traditional New Year) with Kachin ethnic tribe people in Kachin state, northern Myanmar. Government troops in Myanmar have attacked Kachin forces, one of the country's powerful northern militias, with artillery in a bid to force rebel fighters from a strategic region where China is constructing major hydropower plants.
BANGKOK (AP) — Government troops in Myanmar have attacked one of the country's powerful northern militias with artillery trying to force rebel fighters from a strategic region where China is building major hydropower plants.
The fighting has killed at least four people and forced 2,000 more to flee since it started Thursday, according to the U.S. Campaign for Burma.
The violence is some of the most serious in Myanmar since its military junta handed power in March to a civilian government critics say is simply a proxy for continued military rule. The new government has said it wants to improve ties with ethnic minorities that have waged rebellions along the border, but the latest fighting underscores the deep tension that remains.
The rebels involved in the most recent clashes belong to the Kachin, one of Myanmar's sizable ethnic minorities. Their decades of struggles for more autonomy have routinely been met by military suppression.
Kachin military commander Gwan Maw told U.S.-funded Radio Free Asia on Monday that the fighting in northern Myanmar's Momauk region, near the Chinese border, could spread and possibly escalate into civil war if the government refused to negotiate an end to it with the Kachin Independence Organization.
Though the fighting could worsen, it is unlikely to engulf the repressive nation.
The 8,000-strong Kachin militia reached a peace deal with the country's former ruling junta in 1994, but the truce broke down last year after the militia rejected a call by the government to become border guards under army leadership. The junta made the appeal ahead of last November's elections, Myanmar's first in 20 years, which introduced the nominally civilian government now in power.
The Campaign for Burma, a Washington-based lobbying group that uses Myanmar's former name in its title, said hundreds of Myanmar government troops deployed to the northern region to force out Kachin forces after they refused to abandon a strategic base. The base is located near a major hydropower project that being built by China's state-owned China Datang Corporation, the group said.
A three-hour gunbattle Thursday killed three soldiers and one rebel fighter, who was allegedly captured and beaten to death by government troops, the group said.
Skirmishes erupted again Saturday and lasted until at least Monday, with government forces shelling the area with artillery, Maw said. There were no immediate reports of fighting on Tuesday.

Researchers have revealed that Gabapentin, a medication commonly used in treating neuropathic pain, seizures and biopolar disease in elderly patients may lead to an absence of orgasm.
This is a much higher incidence than was reported in the original clinical trials. Gabapentin induced anorgasmia may be more common in older patients," said Michael D. Perloff, an assistant professor of neurology at Boston University School of Medicine.
Further, anorgasmia appears to be dose dependent. In all cases orgasm returned when Gabapentin was reduced or stopped, Perloff added. Anticonvulsants are more commonly prescribed drug than opioids in patients in the age group of 44-82 years.

Gene Simmons And Shannon Tweed: Is It Over?

Is Gene Simmons' relationship with longtime love Shannon Tweed on the rocks?
It sure looks that way, if you believe what they said during what is surely one of the most awkward (or awkwardly rehearsed?) segments in "The Today Show" history Monday. The couple of 28 years, whose ongoing show "Gene Simmons Family Jewels" premiers Tuesday on A&E, traded jabs about Simmons alleged infidelities; Tweed even told hosts Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford that their relationship has "pretty much unraveled."
"Those last two [years together] were a bitch," Tweed said.
Simmons and Tweed have lived together since 1985 and have two children together--Nicholas and Sophie. Tweed suggested that the pair lasted for nearly three decades for their children's sake.
"My kids are in college, they're cooked," Tweed said. "We held it together until they got to college."

Daily View: Winners and losers in Republican debate

The first major debate of the 2012 campaign allowed voters to weigh up the Republican hopefuls vying for a shot at the White House. But how did the debaters fare?
All came out of it fairly well, says Carl M Cannon in Real Clear Politics.

"All seven managed to express their differences on public policy without being uncivil to one another, or even disagreeing directly with their fellow candidates. This was made easier by their shared antipathy for the Obama administration - and because their differences are pretty nuanced."
Chris Cillizza says in the Washington Post that Mitt Romney did nothing in his 120 minutes on stage to undermine his frontrunner status.

"Romney was serious and well informed - in a word: presidential. His debate experience from 2008 clearly paid off as he stayed focused on President Obama and the economy to the exclusion of almost everything else. Romney also benefited from the fact that none of his rivals seemed to have the stomach to attack him directly."
So who else had a good night? Michele Bachmann is the common consensus.

  • "Bachmann dominated the stage with quotable lines galore and an audience hanging on her every word" - Chris Cillizza again
  • "She managed to tell viewers that she was a tax lawyer and that she raised three children and provided homes for 23 foster children - I don't care how cynical you are; that's impressive" - Michael Barone in the Washington Examiner
  • "Bachmann's strong showing ought to further discourage Sarah Palin whose populist mantle is now being seized by the congresswoman from Minnesota" - Jonathan S Tobin in Commentary
Which serves to remind Elspeth Reeve in The Atlantic Daily of a parallel in pop culture - a 2004 teen film penned by comedian Tina Fey.

"It's like that moment in Mean Girls, when Lindsay Lohan's character ousts Rachel McAdams' to become queen of the Plastics. There's only room for one female bomb-thrower in this campaign!"
So a good night for Romney and Bachmann. Who had a bad night? Tim Pawlenty, says Jonathan S Tobin in Commentary, who fluffed a chance to attack key rival Mitt Romney.

"Offered an opportunity to hit his main opponent hard on Obamneycare as he called it just a few days ago, Pawlenty whiffed. In the end, it really doesn't matter whether it was because he was too nice or not courageous enough to call out Romney to his face. Either way he failed. It was a key moment in this race and one that Pawlenty will rue in the months to come."
Why do these debate matter? As well as votes, it's about the money, says John Dickerson in Slate.
