Corpus Christi police plan ahead with Memorial Day weekend on horizon

Everybody's been working for the weekend, but for police, the job is just getting started.
As visitors descend on the city to celebrate Memorial Day, authorities will be looking for drunken drivers, stranded swimmers and litterbugs.
"It's going to be a great weekend, and we want everybody to enjoy themselves," Corpus Christi Police Chief Troy Riggs said. "But it's going to take all of us working together to have a safe weekend."
Beginning Friday, Corpus Christi police will place an extra 20 officers on patrol through Monday, while Department of Public Safety troopers will step up their presence on area highways. Seat belt violations will be a priority during the ongoing Click It or Ticket campaign, police said.
From Friday through Monday of last year's Memorial Day weekend, police made nine driving while intoxicated arrests, two of which included open containers in the vehicle, 45 public intoxication arrests and three disorderly conduct arrests.
The Nueces County District Attorney's office has announced a "no refusal" weekend, meaning a medical technician will be available to draw blood from suspected drunken drivers who refuse a Breathalyzer test.
"If you're out partying, or doing something at someone's home, just make sure you have a designated driver," Riggs said. "Keep others from drinking and driving if you've seen someone has had too much."
Police ask visitors to enjoy the beach, but help keep it clean by leaving glass containers at home and throwing away trash.
Meteorologists forecast warm and breezy conditions through Memorial Day.
