Fuel prices fall ahead of Memorial Day

Fuel prices have fallen slightly, and AAA Auto Club South predicts more declines leading up to Memorial Day weekend.
Last week, South Florida’s average price for regular unleaded gasoline fell to $3.90 from $3.98 the previous week and $2.86 a year ago. The drop comes as oil prices fell 16 cents to $99.49 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, the AAA Fuel Gauge Report said.
The price declines are attributed to a drop in the euro's value last week that elevated the dollar’s value and pushed oil prices downward. In addition, fuel demand has fallen in Europe and the US.
South Florida fuel average details:
  • Fort Lauderdale: A gallon of regular unleaded gasoline was $3.89, down from $3.96 the previous week and $2.83 a year ago.
  • Miami: Regular unleaded dropped to $3.90 from $3.97 the previous week and $2.86 a year ago.
  • West Palm Beach/Boca Raton: Regular unleaded averaged $3.92, down from $4 the previous week and $2.89 a year ago.
“Retail gas prices are expected to decrease further this week,” AAA Auto Club South spokeswoman Jessica Brady said. “Gas prices could drop another 5 cents before the Memorial Day holiday, causing more travelers to make last-minute decisions to take a trip before the three-day weekend.”
