Slide Show: Women in the Channel – CEOs Tackle A Tough Question

It’s not a particularly comfortable topic to discuss, this notion that there aren’t as many women in leadership positions in the telecom channel, or the industry overall, as there are in other sectors. The disparity comes as no surprise, however. After all, telecom began with a man, Alexander Graham Bell, in 1876, and has since remained largely populated by men as cultural influences steered most women away from math and science and, as a result, technology and communications.
Such an environment has nurtured few women in high places over the years, with some notable exceptions, some of whom Channel Partners profiles in one part of its special report, “Women in the Channel." In addition to gathering those perspectives, though, Channel Partners wanted to know what telecom CEOs think of the climate for women in the channel. So, we sought out the top brass of five channel-friendly service providers: PAETEC, Windstream, tw telecom, EarthLink and Broadview Networks. While some of the executives spoke with more candor than others, the underlying messages were two-fold: on the downside, women should be better-represented in channel leadership; on the plus side, social advancements have created more opportunity than ever for women.
